I’ve been eating tacos around the region for years now, and if I’m being honest, Olivo Tacos might be the best ‘street tacos’ in the area!

Olivo Tacos began their journey as a Middle Eastern, Mexican, and Latin-infused restaurant in Rockford, Illinois, with the mission of serving up delicious and high-quality tacos at a great price. Considering that the truck prices their street tacos at 3 for $5, I’d say they are living up to their mission by keeping incredible prices for this day and age.

For me, what makes a good taco starts with the salsa. Olivo Tacos’ red and green salsas are exactly what I prefer in a good sauce, savory and zesty with a nice spicy finish. Essentially, the type of heat that doesn’t linger too long after your meal or have you drenched with sweat. For this meal, I opted for steak, which was well seasoned, packed with flavor, and reminiscent of Los Angeles street tacos.

Last, the tortillas are what give this taco the traditional flavors and texture of a traditional street taco. After speaking with the owner and learning more about the origin story, the tortillas for these tacos are sourced from around the Chicago region.

I was fortunate enough to stumble upon the taco truck when I was visiting the Syracuse Regional Market, which is another gem worth checking out if you’re in the area.
